Week 9Term 32022

Year 5 Camp 2022

From the Principal

Welcome to week 9! This term has felt particularly busy, but I think that is because we are almost post-COVID and getting back into a more natural school rhythm. The Year 5s went on camp to Illawonga, on the Murray River last week and had a wonderful experience. Some of the highlights I have heard from the year 5 students was the caving where they were able to find fossils, being on a speedboat and even having an experience driving the boat, to participating in the trail walks.

We also had students in Years 3-6 represent Bethany in the SACSA AFL competitions last week and early this week. Despite the poor weather in week 8, everyone had a great time competing in the AFL competition. Congratulations to all those who have represented our school so well.

This week our students from years 2-6 were invited to participate in the Commissioner for Children and Young People’s Student Voice Postcard 2022. The purpose of the postcard activity was to enable the Commissioner to get an authentic representation of the thoughts and opinions of the young people in South Australia. The answers to the questions on the postcards remain anonymous, and once all the responses have been submitted, a report is compiled and published, and the results are used for planning and delivering relevant services for our young people.

This Thursday, 22nd of September, is the extraordinary public holiday to mourn the passing of the late Queen Elizabeth II. If you were interested in signing the Condolence Book, the City of Playford is offering an opportunity at the Playford Civic Centre – Council Chamber on:

  • Weekdays between 9.00am – 5.00pm
  • Saturday between 10.00am – 2.00pm
  • Sunday between 1.00 – 4.00pm

The Condolence Book will be open and available until Friday 23rd.

The school will be closed on Thursday 22nd of September in line with the National Day of Mourning, but we are very eager to see everyone return for Friday 23rd because we are holding our annual Jump Rope for Heart Day. Some of our students have been working very hard to raise money for the Heart Foundation. Thank you for supporting them!

Week 10 will also be a busy week, with our final night of the Parent Teacher Interviews on Tuesday 27th of September. The year 1s & 2s are having their Swimming Week, and this is always a fabulous experience for our students. Our final day of the term is Friday 30th of September, and we finish at the normal time of 3.10pm.

We have had some concerns raised around the traffic and parking in and around the school site. Thank you to those who have demonstrated courteous and considerate road behaviours.

We ask that our parents do not park in the Goodstart Early Learning Centre as this is not affiliated with our school and their parking space is limited to their clients. Please utilise the parking spaces provided by the school, or find a safe park in a nearby street. Remember, our students are precious and do not bounce – let us all work together to keep our children safe as they arrive and leave the school site.

As we wrap up the term and head into a two-week school break, I do wish you and your family a very safe and restful school holiday. Thank you for your ongoing support of the school and I look forward to seeing you all next term.

God bless you,

Deb Clifford

2022 Financial Commitment Forms

The 2023 Financial Commitments Form will be posted out in the next couple of weeks. Please keep an eye out for them. As they are important for the Finance Team to plan for next year, we ask that you complete and return them by the due date which is Friday 4th November.

Health Care

Please see the information below regarding Chicken Pox.

Chickenpox
Chickenpox (varicella) is a viral infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus.

How chickenpox spread
Chickenpox is spread when an infected person talks, breathes, coughs or sneezes tiny particles containing infectious agents into the air. These are called small particle aerosols. Due to their tiny size, small particle aerosols can travel long distances on air currents and remain suspended in the air for minutes to hours. These small particle aerosols may be breathed in by another person. Chickenpox is also spread by contact with or breathing in blister fluid.

Signs and symptoms
Symptoms of chickenpox may include:

  • Slight fever and cold-like symptoms, followed by a rash.
  • A rash appears as blisters which crust to form scabs and is usually itchy.
  • Crops of blisters may appear over several days and various stages of blisters may be present. The rash is usually more noticeable on the trunk than on the limbs. It may affect the scalp and the inside of the mouth, nose, and throat.
  • In childhood, chickenpox is usually a mild illness and can be so mild it might not be noticed.
  • Chickenpox in adults is more severe and may be complicated by pneumonia (lung infection or inflammation).
  • Chickenpox may be particularly severe in children with leukaemia, pregnant women and young babies.

    Diagnosis
Chickenpox have a typical appearance and are usually diagnosed by clinical presentation. A blood test can detect if someone has protection from chickenpox infection in the past, but the test may not be helpful in determining if there is adequate immunity to varicella-zoster virus following vaccination.

Incubation period (time between becoming infected and developing symptoms)
For chickenpox, 10 to 21 days, commonly 14 to 16 days, but may vary in people whose immune system is suppressed.

Infectious period (time during which an infected person can infect others)
For chickenpox, from 2 days before the rash appears until at least 5 days after the rash first appears and all blisters have crusted over.

    Returning to school

Children who have Chicken Pox should be kept at home until all blisters have dried (usually about 5 days).

kind regards,

Priya Wilson

School Nurse

What a day it was! In windy and rainy conditions, the Year 3/4 girls did a stellar job to win 3 out 5 games. For many of the girls it was their first-time playing football and the way they went about encouraging and helping each other learn the game was fantastic! I look forward to seeing the girls continuing playing next year. A big thank you to all the parents that helped and encouraged the girls throughout the day.
