Week 9Term 22023

Year 5 Camp

From the Principal

Welcome to our final newsletter for Term 2.

We have several exciting things happening in the coming days. On Friday 30th June, our SRC have organised a Pyjama/Casual day to raise money for library books for our sister school, Hope School in Sumatra. Our Year 1 students are heading to the zoo on that day and so there will be an option for them to purchase a small popcorn and juice box as their way to contribute to the fundraiser. Our Year 3 students are holding a Pyjama story telling event at school on the same day which sounds like a fun way to read.

In Week 10 our Year 5 and Year 6 students have their swimming lessons each day. It is also NAIDOC week. NAIDOC Week is a time to celebrate the histories, cultures and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The theme for NAIDOC week is ‘For Our Elders’. Classes will explore this theme in a variety of ways and build upon the knowledge from Reconciliation week. It is wonderful to be a part of a community that values the many cultures we represent and to learn more about others.

Next week Choir have a concert in the PAC at 4-4:30pm on Wednesday 5th July. It will be great to see how these students shine as they share their repertoire with family and friends.

Thank you to those of you who have given us feedback, we do have an awesome community. One of the changes we have made is regarding the additional fee for Munch Monitor, our canteen software. We understand that families are feeling financial pressure as the cost of living increases and we would like to reduce the cost of using the canteen. Usually, Munch Monitor requires a payment of $4.65 per term but we have decided to subsidise this to reduce it to $2 each term. We hope that this reduction makes it more affordable for you, especially those who wish to use it occasionally as a treat.

We have a small group of staff who are heading over to our sister school to provide professional development and I look forward to sharing more about this next term. I hope that you enjoy reading the camp reflections included by our Year 5 students who had a wonderful experience last week.

Finally, I would like to remind you that school finishes on Friday 7th July at 3:10pm and resumes on Tuesday 25th July. Have a wonderful school break.

God bless,

Wendy Matear

Principal

This Week's Memory Verse

Nothing is hidden from God! He sees through everything, and we will have to tell him the truth.

Hebrews 4:13

Deputy's Corner

Friday 30th of June, our SRC students are running a PJ/Casual Day to raise money for Hope Village. The SRC are super excited to see everyone wearing either their pyjamas or casual clothing for those who don’t want to wear their PJs to school.

Remember, it is super chilly and wet at the moment, so think about wearing warm clothing and sensible footwear to allow all students to play at recess and lunch. Check out the flyer below for all the details. The SRC thank you so very much for your participation and support of their fundraiser.

God bless you,

Deb Clifford
Deputy Principal

Health Care

Week 10 is swimming week for our Year 5’s and 6’s.

I would like to remind you of the following:

  • Eczema can get worse when swimming - if your child suffers from eczema, please talk to the teacher or to the school nurse who would be able to help you develop a care plan to help your child enjoy swimming
  • As usual, the school will pack the medication that has already been provided to the school
  • Please make sure to check your child’s hair for headlice before the swimming event
  • If your child is not feeling well, please keep the child at home and notify the school
  • As per the swimming centre policy, you must not swim for 2 weeks after gastro symptoms have ceased

For more information about swimming centre policies please visit the below link https://parafieldgardensswimschool.com.au/contact-us/our-policies

Year 5 Camp

Last week the Year 5’s went on camp to Woodhouse Activity Centre in the Adelaide Hills.

Despite the weather (record amounts of rain), we still had a great time. The students were placed in 3 groups and rotated through activities. Some activities needed to be modified or changed to keep us out of the rain as much as possible. They took on activities such as rock climbing, geocaching, tube slide, team challenges, ice blocking (sliding down a small hill on a block of ice), making fire and Challenge Hill!

Everyone had their own highlights – many students loved racing down the tube slides, either on the curved slower slide or the straight speed slide. Some of the funniest moments involved watching students choose to attempt to swing across a small creek via 4 ropes, and usually fall in!

In a very pleasant surprise, the food on camp was first rate! Items such as marinated meats, apple crumble, bacon and eggs and lasagna really hit the spot on a cold winter day!

It was a great group to take on camp, even though it was the first camp experience for most of them. If the students were anything like the staff and parents who went, they would’ve been very excited to get back to their own bed and have a big sleep!

NAIDOC Week (National Aboriginal and Islanders Day Observance Committee)

This year, NAIDOC Week celebrations will be held across Australia on July 2 – 9 July, which is our Term 2, Week 10. This is an annual observance to celebrate and recognise the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The theme for 2023 is “For Our Elders”

Across every generation, our Elders have played, and continue to play, an important role and hold a prominent place in our communities and families.

The Learning
In week 10, the whole school will be involved in learning experiences using a range of resources and creative expressions from ELC to Year 6.

Sharing the Learning

During Term 3, Week 2, each class will share their learning with a part of the school community such as a class from another year level. Students will be encouraged to express their learning to develop their agency and understanding.
