Bethany Christian SchoolMENU
Welcome to our final full newsletter for 2024. We are only a week away from our Christmas Exhibition, Jesus the Promise, Wednesday 4th December 5:30pm - 7:30pm, beginning on our oval. We will park staff cars on the rear of the oval to free up some carpark space for you. You will also need to park locally so please be aware of our neighbours by keeping driveways clear and not parking on yellow council painted lines. Thank you for representing us well.
We will once again be partnering with Parafield Gardens Salvation Army to put together food hampers for those in need this Christmas. If you would like to bring any of the following items to the Christmas Exhibition you can place them in the grey tubs near the first aid tent: long-life milk, rice, pasta, pasta sauce, pancake mix, can fruit, jelly crystals, sweet biscuits, savoury biscuits/chips, can peas & carrots, can corn, can potatoes, meal base/simmer sauce, instant coffee, tea bags, hot chocolate, instant noodles, oats, jam, muesli bars. Another opportunity to show generosity can be found on our Tree of Hope. You have an opportunity to contribute to the Christmas celebration at Hope Village, Indonesia. You may like to make a donation towards classroom readers and resources at Hope School, our sister school in Indonesia. Or you may even like to sponsor a child for 2025. For more information about sponsorship https://hopevillage.org.au/sponsorship/child-sponsorship/
As we enter a season of giving, we are reminded by our memory verse this week that God was first generous to us. God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son, so that whoever believes in him will have eternal life. This one act of generosity is still impacting millions of people around the world today. At Bethany, we are grateful for this precious gift, and we are excited to be celebrating Jesus the Promise with you.
School finishes on Wednesday 11th December at 3:10pm. We will livestream and record our final awards assembly for you to enjoy. You will receive a link via email and BCS App that will ask you to agree to the appropriate use of the video, and then allow you to watch it over the following two weeks. Our Year 6 students will graduate on Tuesday 10th December with a formal ceremony at 6pm, followed by a dance party at school. This is a wonderful event that celebrates this important milestone.
We hold a time of transition for all our students and teachers on the Monday of the last week of school. It is a time to gather in next year’s class and to see the friends that will join together for learning in 2025. This is also how you will know which class teacher your child will have next year. We also hold a Reception Orientation session for parents and students to come along on Friday 6th December. At this time, we welcome those families who will be joining us as well as giving a blessing to those who are moving on to continue their educational journey.
We want to thank you for your partnership with us. This community is filled with people who care about children, love God and who want the best for each other. Our vision is to excel in Christian education and character, inspiring greatness, while serving communities and impacting nations. I pray that you experience God’s peace, love, and joy as you celebrate the Christmas season and that you may know His blessings for the new year.
God bless,
Wendy Matear
Principal
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
John 3:16
The energy levels and excitement are building as everyone works towards our end of year school event, “Jesus - The Promise”. We love watching how the students are working together to create a meaningful product for the end of year event.
There is also an excitement, and sometimes a little niggling tentativeness, building around the change that comes with completing another year at school. Our youngest members in the Early Learning Centre have already been transitioning to the ‘big’ school and have had two visits already to their Reception classrooms for 2025. Our Year 6s have had a similar experience, as they have had their transition visits to the ‘bigger’ school, whether that be Temple Christian College or another secondary school. In Week 9, everyone will have the opportunity to visit their new teacher and meet their new class.
For some students, this will be an easy journey, and they will be looking forward to the change. For others, it can be quite nerve-wracking, and these are the children who will require support of someone who is bigger, stronger, wiser and kind who can come alongside them, reassure them and coach them through the change of class and teacher successfully.
Reframe the challenge of change by making it into an opportunity to help your child to find the positive possibilities in a situation. It is only human nature to focus intently on what might go wrong rather than what might go right. This might also include when you find out that your child feels that they don’t have that one special friend in their class. It’s so easy to get anxious ourselves, but remember we are called to be the bigger, stronger, wiser and kind person to lend them our strength to help them with their thinking. So often the fear is unfounded, and children find additional friends and have a marvellous year in the class they were once so anxious about. Helping our children to build the skills to respond effectively to change sets them up to thrive every day, not only emotionally but academically as well. According to Cluey Learning (2021), the single most powerful predictor of human resilience is social support. With supportive relationships in place the actual success in navigating change can be such a boost to their confidence, which becomes contagious, and they are very often able to feel confident to tackle challenges in other areas of their lives also.
Parents are the greatest resource and support for anxious children. Some tips on how to support our children are;
Normalise how our children are feeling. That means, listening to how they are feeling and reflect back what you’ve heard, such as “I hear that you’re feeling nervous, and that’s okay and understandable.” Very often we feel that negative emotions are something to be avoided or stopped, but treating those feelings with kindness, openness and acceptance helps them to become more manageable, and it can even help with the feelings to be resolved more quickly. Reminding your child that these feelings are normal and talking about situations where you might have felt the same way they’re feeling can help them to create and maintain their positive expectations about the change.
Resist the temptation to compare! So many of us are bombarded by the unrealistic expectations social media has set up that we are anxious that our children don’t ‘measure up’. Every child is different and unique, and we need to respond to the individual needs of our own child, not expect them to fit into a predetermined idea of what ‘normal’ is. You may wish to say to your child, “it’s okay that you’re feeling this way. I really want to help you through this, let’s do this together!”
Prepare your child in practical ways by involving them to buy and organise their uniform for Term 1 in 2025. You can include them by getting them to label their clothing, buying and restocking personal stationary items. Keeping a predictable routine at home also gives anxious (and even non-anxious children) a sense of control to help them manage the changes coming their way.
I encourage you to keep talking to your child’s teacher if your child is feeling anxious about next year. They are your greatest support, advocate and source of advice. The Wellbeing Team is also here to help you and your child if you need additional support.
I wish you a wonderful week.
God bless you,
Deb Clifford
Deputy Principal
As we are nearing the end of our school year, I would like to remind you of some of the information related to medication.
Please be aware the school will be returning your child’s medication on the last day of the school, Wednesday 11th December 2024 as part of the end of year procedure. Medications such as EpiPen, antihistamine, and Ventolin will be returned to your child in a named envelope at the end of the day via the red folder. If your child is absent on the day, we recommend that the medication, and the equipment used to administer medication can be picked up from the school before 12pm Friday 13th December 2024.
If you have supplied ADHD medication for your child, please visit the student desk and sign out the medication after 1pm on Wednesday 11th December.
Below is a snapshot of the school’s policy regarding medication administration at school to help you to prepare for 2025. Alternatively, you can visit the school’s website for more detailed information on www.bethany.sa.edu.au/for-parents/careroom-information

Millie F from 5M:
On Friday the 22nd of November, the year 5s set off on an exciting excursion to the MOD (Museum of Discovery) and Hijinx Hotel in the city. As we entered the MOD Museum we found out that we were in a new exhibition called ‘Broken’. We got to experience 3 different interactive rooms which showed us how our voice matters and we looked at many different ways that could make our world more sustainable in the future. At the end of each room, we got to answer questions and what we thought would be good for our future world around us. My favourite part was making a house for humans that was more sustainable and planting a sticker on blocks to show how we all play a part in the puzzle. After that, we went to Hijinx Hotel and has so much fun using our team work skills in the ten different challenge rooms. My favourite was hitting all the buttons and the ball pits rooms. Overall it was an amazing excursion!

On Friday, 22nd of November, the year 5 students went on an excursion to the MOD Museum, SA State Library and the Hijinx Hotel. The experience of these places was fun, active and a ton of creative learning through art, games and videos. At MOD we learnt about the future, the past and a greater understanding of Aboriginal traditions and lands. At the SA State library, we saw a big Christmas tree which we all had a photo in front of. Next we went to Hijinx Hotel where we had a fun game of bowling and then had to use our teamwork skills to complete 10 challenge rooms. We used a lot of energy! It was a fun excursion and a great adventure.
On Monday, 25th November, the Year 6 classes headed down to Port Adelaide to explore some maritime and migration history of South Australia. Our day started off at the world’s oldest surviving Clipper Ship, the City of Adelaide. This ship was built in Sunderland, England, and launched in 1864. Students were able to explore 3 levels of the ship from the cargo storage underneath, to the working class section and then up to the First Class deck. They could imagine what the conditions would have been like on board and what it would have been like to travel such a long distance as people migrated to South Australia. We learnt that the City of Adelaide made 23 return trips from England to South Australia, carrying passengers and cargo and this played a key role in the development of the South Australian colony.
Our next stop was the Maritime Museum where students participated in an interactive experience, “Life on Board”. During this activity, students were asked to consider the experience of life on board for migrants migrating by ship from England to South Australia in 1836. They explored things like: Where did they sleep? What did they eat and drink? How did they cope with illness on board and how did they spend the long days on deck? They also explored the changing motivations for migrating over time and the development of sea travel from sailing ships through to steam and modern cruise liners.
It was a fun day of learning, where students were able to make a lot of connections between what they were discovering at the City of Adelaide ship and the Maritime Museum to what they had been learning during their HASS lessons focusing on Migration. Some thoughtful questions were asked throughout the day, and students were challenged to think about the hardships that went along with migration.

The boys had a red hot go at this year's SACSA Touch Football Tournament. It was great to see how they improved with every game. After mostly close games in the pool rounds, the boys stepped up their game in the placing rounds winning two games in a row to finish 5th out of 8 teams for the day. A big thank you to all the boys for giving their best for Bethany.
