Week 7Term 42023

The recent staff versus student soccer match.

From the Principal

Welcome to our Week 7 newsletter for Term 4. This is our final full newsletter with one more Christmas edition to come in Week 9.

We are very excited to be celebrating the end of year with you at the ‘Light in Christmas’. This event is next Wednesday 6th December 5:30pm-7:30pm. Your teachers will also send home the specific information you need for your child. The event will start at 5:30pm with a Christmas parade led by our Junior Primary and ELC students. This will finish at a gathering point on the oval, so we ask you to bring your children and then join in along the pageant path to cheer them on and enjoy the parade. Our Primary students will line the parade route and we ask you to join them along the route around the oval. This parade starts the event which will then showcase numbers of experiences, products and performances that share with you our theme, the ‘Light in Christmas’. Our Junior Primary students will then be signed out to enjoy the event with you.

Our performance group will have a showcase of drama, dance and musical items. This program will be held in the Performing Arts Centre. The library will be transformed into an immersive light experience using darkness and light, there is a visual arts display along with numbers of meaningful and fun decorations around the school to look at. A group of students have developed some games and experiences for you to enjoy in our Year 3 to 6 building. There will be some food trucks on the oval and time to enjoy the event. At 7:15pm we will gather back on the oval around the Christmas tree (which some students have created with our maintenance team), where the Bethany Choir will lead us in some Christmas songs to finish our night together. Our staff and students are working hard. We are very excited as we prepare to share this event the ‘Light in Christmas’ with you. I would also encourage you to consider supporting the Salvation Army with donations for those in our community who are struggling this Christmas. We have included the list of items that you may like to bring along and leave at the Christmas tree at the event.

We will also hold our graduation events for our ELC students and our Year 6 students. Our final assembly will be a celebration of the year and will include several awards. This event will be live streamed due to the capacity of the room and can be watched at 2pm on Wednesday 13th December. The recording will be available to parents for the next week so that you are able to enjoy that with your children. This is the last day of school and children will be ready to be collected at 3:10pm to finish for the year. Camp Australia are available for bookings after this day.

As we come to the end of the term, we are so glad that we can invite you into the school and look forward to celebrating a year of learning and growth. Have a wonderful weekend and we will see you next Wednesday evening.

God bless,

Wendy Matear

Welcome to week 7! Last week the SRC held their 3rd annual Market Day. With 53 stalls, it was a wonderful lunch market that offered a large array of homemade, bought and pre-loved items. All the students who took part can be congratulated on their fabulous effort. Well done!

Student Representative Council recap of Market Day 2023

Last Friday, our school was a bustling hub of excitement during the vibrant Market Day event. The air was filled with joy and anticipation as students showcased an impressive array of diverse products. From delightful slimes to mystery party bags, and from stunning earrings to intricate jewellery pieces, our school transformed into a marketplace of creativity and innovation. The sight was spectacular – over 50 tables decorated with colourful displays were spread across the school grounds. The enthusiasm of our students was on full display as they ran their stalls, eager to show their creations and products.

The Student Representative Council (SRC) took charge of hosting this delightful event, hosting and planning every detail to make sure it was a success. Their dedication and hard work were clear in the organisation of the event. Our goal was to raise funds for our school's betterment, and they achieved this with a lot of enthusiasm.

To make the event accessible to all students, the prices were set between 50 cents and $10, making sure that everyone could participate and enjoy the products. The affordability of the products encouraged a lively crowd and added to the event.

The Market Day was held during the lunch break, in the handball courts and the undercover area. The result of this fantastic effort was not only a joyful and entertaining day but also a significant achievement in fundraising. We are thrilled to announce that we raised over $250!

It's heart-warming to note that some students chose to generously donate their earnings to Hope Village, an act of kindness that showcases their empathy towards others.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated parents and supportive faculty. Market Day was a celebration of creativity, collaboration, and generosity.

As we are nearing the end of our school year, I would like to inform and remind you of some of the information related to medication.

Please be aware the school will be returning your child’s medication on the last day of the school, 13th of Dec 2023 as the end of year procedure. The medications such as EpiPen, antihistamine, Ventolin will be returned to the student in a named envelope at the end of the day via the red folder. If your child missed picking up the medication, we recommend all the medications and the equipment used to administer medication to be picked up from the school by 12pm Friday the 15th of Dec 2023.

If you have supplied ADHD medication for your child to the school, please visit the student desk and sign out the medication after 1pm on 13th December 2023.

Below is a snapshot of the school’s policy regarding medication administration at school to help you to prepare for 2024. Alternatively, you can visit the school’s website for more detailed information on www.bethany.sa.edu.au/for-parents/careroom-information

  • Medication can only be administered with a doctor’s prescription.
  • All student medical management plans are updated annually.
  • Out-of-date medicines will not be administered.
  • Please ensure medications are given to a member of staff for safe storage.
  • It is vital that medication is NOT stored in children’s school bags.
  • Ensure your child’s medication is clearly labelled with prescription information (dosage, frequency, your child’s name, and date of issue) and is in its original packaging.
  • Prescribed medication that does not bear the child’s name will not be given.
  • Only the child named on the label may be administered prescription medication and only the dosage on the medication label will be given.
  • For non-prescribed medicine, parents must attach a label and print the child’s name clearly from the pharmacist along with a doctor’s letter.
  • Non-prescription medication must also be in its original packaging.
  • Please provide medication with a management plan signed by your doctor in a new labelled zip lock bag, along with any required clean medical equipment e.g., spacer, measuring cup etc.

If your child needs to have medication to be administered while at school in 2024, please provide a Management Plan from your General Practitioner and relevant medications within the first week of your child’s commencement at Bethany Christian School.

First Nations Learning

First Nations Learning - Highlights from 2023

Our whole school, both staff and students ELC-Year 6, have enjoyed a variety of learning experiences about First Nations peoples, cultures and history. We are thankful for the opportunities we have had to grow in our understandings as a school community and celebrate with our First Nations students some important aspects of their families.

The following are some highlights from 2023 and we look forward to building on all this learning in 2024.

  • National Reconciliation Week (NRW) - Our RAP (Reconciliation Action Plan) team worked with our school community to guide thinking and to engage in various learning opportunities. We developed an understanding about the important relationships in Australia and explored how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
  • Dusty Feet Mob - We were blessed to have a performance from an Aboriginal dance group called Dusty Feet Mob during NRW. Students in 1P excitedly joined the Dusty Feet Mob on stage for a dance which talked about the land and animals of our Australia. In a dance that combined culture, language, and faith, we were treated to a moving performance of “Amazing Grace”. In a finale, the whole school joined in dancing to “I am Australian.” This was a truly special moment and one that we’ll treasure.
  • NAIDOC Week celebrations – This year NAIDOC week was held across Australia on July 2 – 9 July, Term 2, Week 10. This annual observance to celebrate and recognise the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across every generation was themed For Our Elders. We reflected on those who have played and continue to play an important role in families and communities.

Part 1 – Experiences and immersion. In Term 2 Week 10, the whole school engaged in learning experiences using a range of resources and creative expressions from ELC to Year 6.
Part 2 - Sharing the Learning. During Term 3, Week 2, each class shared their learning with a part of the school community such as a class from another year level. Students were encouraged to express their learning in order to develop their agency and understanding.

  • First Nations students and families – On Wednesday afternoon of week 7, we gathered for afternoon tea with our First Nations families. Students shared some of their highlights from NRW and NAIDOC Weeks as well as art, language, animals, buddy class experiences and Dusty Feet Mob. Parents enjoyed the opportunity to celebrate their child’s learning and to get-to-know one another more. During a walk through of the Upper Primary building, Year 5 student Isaleli, shared with families how his class had learnt about who elders are, what they can learn from elders in their lives and how they can be leaders and inspire others. Students reflected that they would like the opportunity to learn more about their language, dances and cultures which lead to our next learning adventure. In term 3, students met together to create questions they had about their family. They explored these questions with families and presented their findings to peers, teachers and a small group of parents followed by a shared morning tea of hot chocolate and muffins.

It was really cool that I could share about my culture. It was nice to sit down, have a hot chocolate and relax with my friends. It was also nice to hear and learn about other people’s culture. - Jake 6SC

  • Staff Professional Development – During staff meetings, our teachers have participated in the Building Confidence workshop by Australians Together. These training sessions have been facilitated by our Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) team and have been a valuable time to think, reflect and grow together. Australians Together bring First Nations people and non-Indigenous people together by telling stories to help us understand our history and present contexts and to support staff to embed First Nations cultures in our curriculum.

As a first year graduate teacher it was important to me to grasp a sincere understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives. The PD enabled me to feel confident in admitting a lack of understanding and assisted me in engaging in discussion around the shared history we have and how it relates to the worldview we have as Christians. I look forward to moving through the sessions and sharing my knowledge about how respectful relationships and connections reduce Indigenous injustice and disadvantage with my students.
Emma, Year 2 Teacher

The Year 5/6 boys, led by their captain Lucca M, had an awesome SACSA carnival. After winning 2 pool games in our pool round and drawing the other 3 games, we knew the finals were going to be close. In the semi-final we played off against Kings and won 3-2. This win set us up for a final against Torrens Valley Christian School who we drew 1-1 in the pool rounds.

The Grand final was a fierce contest with both teams’ defensive pressure being strong. Through grit and determination and some nice quick movements and diving, the Bethany boys found a way to score twice, giving the boys a well-deserved 2-1 victory to become the 2023 SACSA champions.

What a beautiful day for Touch Football! The girls played outstanding all day, working as a team, especially on defence. Playing in the semi-finals, the girls took Kings all the way to a 3v3 drop off, where injuries and exhaustion eventually caught up with them.

To the girls’ credit, they regrouped after the disappointment and played off for 3rd where they finished with a 1-1 draw and happily agreed to share third place. Well done girls!
