Week 7Term 32024

Our students enjoying Mini Olympics last Friday.

From the Principal

Welcome to our Week 7 Newsletter for Term 3. Last Friday our Junior Primary students celebrated their learning through our Mini Olympics day. The weather held off and students were able to enjoy a day outside. Sports days give a wonderful opportunity for children to actively use their bodies while also experiencing the importance of perseverance, persistence, and teamwork. I always love the way our students and families take time to encourage others through cheering each other on. Thank you to those of you who were able to come along and make this event so much fun.

We recently had a group of students from Year 3, 4, 5 & 6 who were part of ‘Digi Do’. This is a celebration of technology education and student agency. It is our second year of participating in the event which encourages students to lead one another and learn using technology. Our students and staff represented our school well and had a wonderful day of learning at Scotch College. I would like to congratulate the team for their contributions.

This Friday, 6th September we have our Show Day for students. This is a pupil free day at school for Bethany and Temple Christian College, OSHC will be available. Staff will be involved in professional learning on this day with classroom teachers continuing their implementation of the new version of the Australian Curriculum through Mathematics.

Jump Rope for Heart is coming up later this term. We encourage children to stay active through skipping. We also use this time to raise money for the Heart Foundation. This event is run by the Sports Department each year and is always a lot of fun.

We have our Parent Teacher meetings coming up on Thursday 19th and Tuesday 24th September. Please make sure that you have a working email account to receive the link for these bookings. If you have changed any contact details, please contact the school office to make these updates.

Our Reception students have swimming in the last week of this term and will receive more information. If you have further questions, please feel free to speak with your class teacher.

I hope that you are able to enjoy some time with family this weekend.

God bless,
Wendy Matear
Principal

Deputy's Corner

Welcome to Week 7 of Term 3. Book Week was thoroughly enjoyed by all, especially on Friday when everyone had the opportunity to dress up as their favourite character. The SRC were able to raise $555 which will go towards a new giant game for the Under Cover Area (UCA) for everyone to access, and towards new books for the Hope Village School library.

Commissioner’s Student Voice Postcards Initiative 2024

Bethany Christian School once again has participated in the Commissioner’s Student Voice Postcards Initiative 2024. The Commissioner for Children and Young People provides postcards with four questions for students in Years 2 - 6 to answer in order to gain a greater understanding of what matters most to South Australian children within the age bracket of 8 - 12 years of age. This year the four questions asked are:

My favourite thing to do is …
I want to know more about ….
In the future I hope that ….
My neighbourhood would be better for kids if …

The data collected from the postcards will be collated into a Things that Matter report and will be published early next year.

Lost Property

We have a quite a large number of lost items of clothing, shoes, dress up clothing and drink bottles in our lost and found boxes, located near the Uniform Shop. We are attempting to return all the lost and found items, however much of the clothing is unnamed. Please encourage your child to find their lost items in the Lost and Found boxes. We will leave the unnamed items out on a table after school for parents to look through and find lost personal items.

I wish you and your families a wonderful weekend. If you manage to get to the Royal Adelaide Show, I pray it is a fantastic visit and that you and your families will thoroughly enjoy the experience.

God bless you,

Deb Clifford
Deputy Principal

Highlights

DigiDo Conference

On the 27th of August, 10 students and 5 staff went to Scotch College to attend a digital conference. The students were Millie, Lilly (5M), Samantha, Rush (5T), Annabel (5RT), Logan, Nate (6T), Hannah, Giuliana and Derek (4GT). We all had the best time teaching kids like us new IT skills such using Robots, Digital art and Stopmotion.

We started the day off at school waiting for the bus at 7:45am. When we got to Scotch College, we were pumped. Scotch College staff started us off by going to the showrooms. There were all sorts of things! From 3D printing - all the way to brain x rays! When we were there, we had to collect stamps so we could potentially win a prize.

Soon after that we began our first workshop! We did stuff like Indies robots, Capcut, Lego bricks, VR and more! We did our workshops for about 40 minutes. We all enjoyed it. We discovered all sorts of things that we could enjoy as a hobby.

After, we had recess for about 15 minutes. While recess was on, there was a Just Dance competition! There were about 3 rounds. At the end of recess, we had the first draw for a prize! Out of 2 people drawn, Logan won a prize. She won a card game and was very excited!

Right after the raffle we listened to a digital footprint student panel. One representative from each school went up and talked digital footprints. Digital footprint is about being smart or careful about you and others around you. Our school’s representative was Nate. He spoke very well and was insightful.

Soon we began workshop 2. In workshop 2, Bethany's Robo-Coding group did their workshop. The Robo-Coding members are Annabel, Lilly and Rush. Lilly and Annabel taught half of the group a robot called ‘Vincibot’ while Rush was teaching kids about Sphero. We swapped groups halfway. The students from other schools seemed to enjoy it very much.

It’s now lunch time and Just Dance is on the TV Again. Lunch felt short, only 30 mins. Then another student panel. It was called ‘digital citizenship’. The digital citizenship question was "Why is digital citizenship important, and what actions can we take to foster positive online cultures in our ever-increasing digital lives?" Our school representative was Annabel. Soon after that we have another prize on offer for the ‘Just Dance’ winners. Again, Logan won a prize, as the 2nd highest point scorer. She won a gaming mouse and was even more excited than last time!

Later we had Workshops 3 and 4. In workshop 3 was Bethany's ‘Stop motion group’. They all enjoyed making the example. The group members were Logan and Nate. The final workshop run by a Bethany group was ‘Pixel Perfect’. The workshop members were Millie, Samantha, Hannah, Giuliana and Derek. The other students commented that they all enjoyed it and they said that is was a very creative activity.

Finally, it's time to go and we hop on the bus to get back to school at approximately 4:00pm.

It was a great day seeing how IT can be used at school and for our own enjoyment.

On Friday 9th August Bethany took 28 students from Year four to six to compete in the annual SAPSASA Para District Athletics at Bridgestone Athletics Centre.

In beautiful sunny conditions our students participated with a great positive attitude at the SAPSASA Athletics Carnival this year. It was fantastic to see students get to do events they had trained for. When it came time to perform for their events, each student put in a big effort to do their best. Our athletics team cheered each other on and helped each other throughout the day. Bethany finished the day in 2nd place in Division one. Thank you to all the students who participated and the parents who came along to support the team.

The boys had a great day giving their best all day long. It was so great to see them encouraging one another, working together and having a great time playing netball. The boys played really well winning every game except one. The boys represented Bethany to a high level and should be proud. Well done boys.

The 3/4 girls team shone today. They were full of passion, enthusiasm and skill. Throughout each game the girls gave 100% to any position given, ending the day with undefeated dominance. I couldn't be more proud of the competition these girls brought to the day and not to mention their fantastic sportsmanship. The girls were constantly encouraging one another and after each goal a celebratory high five was shared among the shooters. It was great to see and the girls should feel proud of their achievements.

The 3/4 silver team were a pleasure to coach this year. For lots of the girls they were playing netball for the first time. The girls encouraged each other and it was great to see the girls improve over the day. They played with great spirit and were willing to try new positions. Well done girls!

Great day out at the SACSA Netball Carnival on Tuesday 20th August. It was wonderful to see fantastic sportsmanship and team encouragement throughout the whole day. Although it took a couple games to find our momentum your positive team attitude never stopped. Well done 5/6 boys!

This year’s netball carnival was a fun but wet day. The Bethany Gold Girls played their hardest all day to finish in 5th place narrowly missing out on the top 4. Most pleasing was the improvement the girls showed in teamwork and connection the more they played together. Great sportsmanship and positivity was displayed all day even after the games we lost. They can be proud of the enthusiasm and optimism they showcased for each game and representing the values of Bethany Christian School well.

It was a great day watching the girls come together and support each other. We had a mixture of students who have had plenty of experience playing netball and some who were just starting. They played some great games and showcased great sportsmanship during some challenging matches.
