Week 7Term 22025

Some of our Reception students at the Farm Barn excursion.

From the Principal

Welcome to our Week 7 newsletter for Term 2. The cold weather has certainly settled in and we are finally seeing some of the rain our farmers desperately need. The building project is taking shape with the roof beginning to go on which will change the need for very large machinery. We are very grateful for the way you have been managing safe pick-ups and drops off as we work around the council works on Countess Street and the building works on Byron Bay Drive.

This week we held a parent workshop ‘Supporting Children with Neurodiversity’. Rebecca Starling is an Educational Consultant and Family Therapist with years of experience at supporting neurodiverse young people and their families. She shared her wisdom and practical ways that we can support our children to be more successful in their learning. Mrs Clifford shares some more information in her section. It is always great to keep learning together in supporting the challenging process called ‘parenting’. Thank you for all you do in partnering with us.

I am very much looking forward to our Exhibition of Learning which is only a couple of weeks away. Our students are working hard to prepare something to share with you. Our younger students (Reception, Year 1 & Year2) will be dismissed at 3:10pm and you will be able to walk around together and enjoy the displays they have created to show their learning until 4:10pm. The focus is on our learning badges and learning the skills of goal-setting and reflection. Our ELC will also be open a bit later at 5pm until 6pm with a display of learning that you can come along and see with your children. Following that, at 5:30pm-6:30pm, our Primary students will be presenting their learning in an Exhibition style. We encourage you to come along and interact with each of the students and the learning they will be sharing and showing. We have some questions that you might like to ask them so that these students learn how to share their final product and the process they have gone through to get there. We extend the invitation to family and friends that might also be able to come along and experience this event.

God bless you

Deputy's Corner

A warm welcome to everyone for Week 7. I trust you all enjoyed your long weekend and were able to make lovely memories with your family.

This week we had a parent workshop “Supporting Children with Neurodiversity” run by Rebecca Starling. It was a lovely afternoon learning about neurodiversity as not a problem to solve but rather a perspective to include. Rebecca shared that neurodiversity is a term that refers to the natural variation in human brain function, including differences such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) which are not at all deficits, simply a different way of processing the world.

There are so many strengths to ASD, such as keen attention to detail, strong observational skills, extraordinary memory, concentration that is distraction-free, expertise in subjects and unique thinking that supports innovative thinking.

For those with ADHD, it is not an attention deficit, it’s a difference in cognition and attention difference.

It was a great reminder from Rebecca, that all behaviour is functional. It is a communication tool, with all behaviour serving the purpose to meet a need. As adults and significant supports to children, it is our role to discover what the child’s need is, and to match our strategy to the function of the behaviour by responding with curiosity. Ask, ‘is the child trying to gain or escape from something?’  It’s not so much about having the right answers, but asking the right questions.

A huge take away from the session was that we are guiding stars to our children. We are to support their emotional regulation, to invite choice, collaboration and autonomy to guide them and to engage them.

The session concluded with the reminder of safe brains think better. Our brains feel safe when we have access to the 4 ‘Happy Hormones’ of Dopamine, Serotonin, Endorphins and Oxytocin.

Dopamine: Motivation and reward – wins, self-care, novelty, laughter.

Serotonin: Mood and memory – sunlight, music, nature.

Endorphins: Pain relief – exercise, laughter, chocolate!!

Oxytocin: Bonding – touch, empathy, pets, shared meals.

A quote from someone who attended:

Rebecca Starling shared a wealth of knowledge with us in an afternoon workshop exploring neurodiversity. It was an inspiring and encouraging workshop that provoked thinking about how we can support children in their development of executive functioning skills. These skills include planning steps, impulse control, emotional regulation, future pacing, time perception, transitioning, attending and sustaining focus. Rebecca shared relatable stories and examples of supporting children in effective ways. As a mother of three young girls, I found myself leaning in to soak in new ideas. I was reminded that engagement, choice and autonomy and humour are effective ways to maintain regulation, both in children and adults alike.

I wish you a wonderful week ahead.

God bless you,

Health Care

INFECTIOUS DISEASES

We would like to inform families that there have been confirmed cases of Whooping Cough, Influenza and Rhinovirus in our school.

While these illnesses can be common in school settings, they can also be serious—especially for younger children or those with underlying health conditions. We ask all parents and carers to be alert to any signs of illness in their children.

If your child shows symptoms such as:

  • A persistent or severe cough (particularly with a "whoop" sound)
  • Fever
  • Runny nose or sore throat
  • Difficulty breathing or general signs of feeling unwell

Please keep your child at home and arrange for them to be seen by your GP as soon as possible.

Your support helps us protect the health of all students and staff. If you have any questions, you are welcome to contact the school office on 8283 0000. For further medical advice or information, please refer to SA Health at www.sahealth.sa.gov.au.

Important Health & Medication Reminders for Swimming Week

As we prepare for Swimming Week, we kindly ask families to take note of the following important information:

Medication

The school will pack any medication that has already been provided to us.

If your child requires any additional medication to be administered during swimming week, please ensure the following:

  • The medication is clearly labelled.
  • A medication authority or management plan signed by your doctor is provided.
  • The medication and documentation are sent to the school as soon as possible.

If Your Child is Unwell

If your child is not feeling well, please keep them at home and notify the school. This helps prevent the spread of illness and keeps everyone safe.

Eczema and Swimming

If your child has eczema that worsens with swimming, please speak with your child’s teacher or the school nurse. We can assist in creating a care plan to support your child and help them enjoy the swimming program.

Gastroenteritis Policy

As per the swimming centre’s policy, students must not attend swimming for at least two weeks after gastro symptoms have stopped. This is to ensure the health and hygiene of all participants.

Thank you for helping us maintain a healthy school community.

Reception Excursion to Farm Barn

Last week, our Reception students enjoyed a wonderful day out at the Hahndorf Farm Barn, where learning came to life through hands-on experiences with animals and the environment. This excursion provided valuable opportunities for students to deepen their understanding of where our food comes from and how living things grow, change, and survive.

Throughout the day, students explored the features of living things and learned how to classify them into groups such as mammals, birds, reptiles, and insects. They eagerly discovered the unique characteristics of each animal and discussed the importance of these features in helping animals live in their environments. One of the highlights was observing the life cycles of different animals and understanding how living things grow and change over time.

The visit also encouraged students to reflect on healthy food choices by making connections between the farm animals and the food products we consume. Discussions about dairy, eggs, fruit, and vegetables helped students build awareness of how food reaches our tables and the importance of choosing fresh, nutritious options.

In addition to the farm visit, classes have recently experienced the excitement of hatching chicks in their classrooms. This hands-on project allowed students to witness the beginning of a life cycle, care for living creatures, and take responsibility for their well-being.

An important focus of the excursion was student growth and resilience. Students were encouraged to be responsible for their behaviour and belongings throughout the day. Teachers were proud to see students demonstrate independence, cooperation, and respect for both the animals and their peers.

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the wonderful parent volunteers who joined us on the day. Your support, supervision, and enthusiasm helped make this excursion a safe, smooth, and memorable experience for everyone. We truly appreciate the time you gave to be part of this special learning opportunity.
