Week 5Term 32019

From the Principal

Welcome to our Week 5 newsletter, I trust it finds you and your family well. This week it is my absolute pleasure to announce that the Director of our Early Learning Centre (ELC), Mrs Emily Bondarenko, is expecting a baby in early 2020. She has done a tremendous job in setting up and establishing our ELC, and leading her team to develop a flourishing centre. We wish Emily and her husband, Matt, all the very best in the lead up to the arrival of their newest family member!

It has been a very busy term for Bethany Christian School. Last week the NED (‘Never give up, Encourage others, Do your best’) performed to our students. It was a well-received performance full of yo-yo stunts, humour and some magic tricks. The show reminded the students about the Growth Mindset and the power of ‘yet’. Afterwards, NED yo-yo’s were sold to encourage the themes taught in the performance. The school sold over $3000 worth of NED products, and all of this goes back to NED to pay for another school to have the NED perform at no cost to them in a ‘pay-it-forward’ scheme.

Last week our staff were welcomed to a special walk-through of the new Year 3 - 6 building currently under construction. It was wonderful to see the learning spaces taking shape and it gave us all a good indication of how fabulous the new building will be once fully complete.

A Father’s Day stall will be held on Wednesday 28th and Thursday 29th August (Week 6) in the Function Room. Time will be allocated to your child’s class to go in and make a selection and buy a gift. If you have any questions, please see your child’s classroom teacher.

Book Week has gone well this week celebrating the theme of, ‘Reading is my secret power’. The library staff have been working hard on the book fair held in the library. The book fair will be open until Monday 26th of August before and after school, as well as lunch times, so there is still time for your child to buy a book or two!

There will be a pupil free day on Friday 30th of August (Week 6), which is the school’s official ‘Show Day’. This day has been dedicated for families to take their children to the Adelaide Show so that attendance is not disrupted on other school days. Camp Australia is open for anyone who would require care for their child or children on that day. Please note the school will be closed for staff training on that day.

I wish you and your families a wonderful week.

God bless you,

NAPLAN READINESS

In Week 6, our Year 3 and 5 students will be involved in a school readiness on line NAPLAN test in order to prepare for future NAPLAN online tests. We will not receive feedback regarding test results. This practice test is predominantly run for two reasons. Firstly to prepare students in how to use the online platform and secondly to ascertain school readiness for this platform in preparation for NAPLAN online in 2020. If you would like to know any more information about this please speak to the NAPLAN Co-ordinator Melissa Taylor.

Walk A Mile

Last week a group students, staff and parents met before school to walk together and raise money for homeless people in South Australia. The "Walk A Mile" fundraiser is organised through the Hutt Street Centre. As a school we were able to raise over $400 through the walk and also through the sale of cheese toasties that were made by our Year 6s. Thanks to everyone who supported the fundraiser!

Reception Road Safety Excursion

Last Friday our reception classes went out for the day to the Road Safety Centre where they learnt about being safe on the roads. Afterwards they had the opportunity to play on the playground. Everyone had a great time!
