Bethany Christian SchoolMENU
Welcome to Week 5 of Term 2. Last week our Year 5 and 6 students had their week of swimming lessons at Parafield Swimming Centre. This week the SRC held a Staff versus Student Soccer match on Wednesday lunch time. It is always a very popular event and was well attended by our students. Despite the valiant efforts of the students, they were defeated by the staff, 3 - 0.
Pupil Free Day
On Friday 7th June, Week 6 of this term, we will be having a Pupil Free day. Our Camp Australia OHSC will be operating on that Friday to support those families who need care for their children.
Faith In Our Future
People are being invited from our Christian school network as well as the wider community who are concerned about the recommendations of the Australian Law Reform Commission and their potential impact on faith-based education.
On 21 March, the Australian Law Reform Commission released a set of recommendations that are an appalling attack on faith and freedom of belief in Australia. If the Government accepts these ALRC recommendations, it means Christian schools won’t have the freedom to preference people who share the same Christian values and beliefs when making employment decisions.
As Paul Kelly also noted, "Religious education, its communities and parental discretions would be weakened long term."
The good news is the Federal Government has not yet made its position clear but we need to send a clear message to the Prime Minister that Christian schools must be able to employ people who share our faith.
Faith In Our Future is a town hall event that will bring together supporters of Christian schools and their representatives in parliament.
These events are an opportunity to share about the impact of Christian faith in our schools, to share our concerns with our Federal political representatives and ask for their support.
If you want the Government to continue to value the faith of Christian teachers and staff, you need to be there!
Date: Wednesday 12 June 2024
Location: Tyndale Christian School
Address: 50 Fern Grove Boulevard, Salisbury East
Time: 6.30 for 7pm (finishing by 9pm)
Registration is free but spaces are limited. Register here: https://mychristianschool.au/adelaide
Please join the staff of Bethany Christian School at Tyndale Christian School on Wednesday 12th June to show our support in this town hall event. Invite your churches to this event. BASE Church has already started promoting this event in their congregation. Our attendance will provide a strong message to our MPs and the Government that we are serious about Christian education.
I wish you and your families a blessed week.
God bless,
Debbie Clifford
Christ is the visible likeness of the invisible God. He is the first-born Son, superior to all created things.
Colossians 1:15
National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
The NRW theme for 2024 is Now More Than Ever. It is a reminder to all of us to advocate for justice and the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people must continue. In treaty making, in truth-telling, in understanding our history, in education, and in tackling racism. We can all play a part in seeing reconciliation for our nation.
Each year, Reconciliation SA launches the week by hosting the National Reconciliation Week Breakfast. This year it was held at the Adelaide Convention Centre on Kaurna Yerta with over 2,800 guests in attendance. This year, I was privileged to be one of those guests and while I went in support of seeing change, I walked away with far more than I could give.
Of specific note for me personally, was the photo montage shared in tribute to Dr Lowitja O’Donoghue, AC CBE DSG. A strong, fearless woman, who engaged with politics and with institutions at a time when Aboriginal women were under-recognised and under-represented in national leadership. Her life spanned a time of momentous change in Australian Indigenous politics; but her work extended way beyond the confines of First Nations policy and had a profound impact on the entire country. She was a nation builder.
At the end of someone’s life, we can stand back and admire the resilience and determination that was demonstrated. But before that, Dr Lowitja was one of the many faces we see in images of children of who were taken away and raised in isolation from their family, language, culture, and home. As a mother, I look on those images with heartfelt sorrow. And, while there were tears on my face, it also sparked more determination in my heart. Determination to be a part of a different Australia – one that sees each person as valuable, one that is honest about its past and one that seeks to do more than just hope for things to be different. I want to be someone who actively walks alongside others and, like Dr Lowitja, builds our nation.
Also in attendance at this event was Antonio Caruso, a current Year 5 student, and his family. Here is a reflection from Antonio on his contribution to and experiences at this year’s NRW breakfast…
“It was awesome to be invited to the National Reconciliation Week Breakfast. The food was great, it was really fancy and came in little portions. The song at the end of the breakfast was another highlight, the group called DEM MOB were really inspiring. It was the first time I have seen a First Nations hip hop group on stage, it was really different, but I liked it. Something really special about the breakfast was that a recording of my voice was the introduction to the event. In the background of the introduction video my dad’s art was also displayed, this was really special for my family. Overall, it was a fun time and I enjoyed myself very much.”
This event was recorded live by Channel 44 and is available to watch on free-to-air tv on Thursday 30 May 10.00am & Sunday 2 June 7.30pm on C44 Adelaide, or on-demand on community TV streaming service CTV+.
I encourage you to take time to watch this recording, attend a reconciliation event in your community and/or engage in an open conversation with your family and friends. Here are a few questions to get you started:
• Who are some significant people who have made positive changes in the reconciliation movement both in the past and present?
• How can all Australians be inspired by these role models to act now to make change for the future?
• Why is truth-telling important for all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous Australians?
• How can we respectfully learn from and listen to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people?

During this time on a Monday and Tuesday the South Australian Cricket Association has been coming out to help run an All Girls Cricket Blast Program. This program is specifically targeted towards girls who are in Years 3 – 6.
As part of this program, they will receive a free participant pack which includes a tote bag, drink bottle, and mascot ball. To receive this pack, it does require your child to be registered as part of the program.
Below is the link to the online registrations through Play HQ. Or alternatively you can scan the QR code below. Please note this is only for Girls in Years 3 – 6
You do not have to register your child should you wish not to; it just means they won’t receive the free participant pack.
Should you have any questions please email the Sports Department.
On Friday, May 3rd, our SACSA Athletics team travelled to SA Athletics Stadium for the annual SACSA Athletics competition. In beautiful conditions, our students ran, jumped and threw in their various events, giving their best all day. It was most pleasing to see fantastic sportsmanship and great encouragement for both their Bethany peers and towards other schools as our students enjoyed friendly competition amongst other Christian Schools. Whether they walked away with a placing in their event or not, all students contributed to earning points for Bethany, which resulted in Bethany taking out first place in Division 2. Congratulations everyone on a great overall win for the day!

Fantastic day and effort by all! It was great to watch each student give their very best in their individual races and hear the encouragement from the rest of the team on the side lines. Everyone had a great attitude and showed excellent sportsmanship. Well done, Bethany, you certainly made the three of us coaches very proud!
