Bethany Christian SchoolMENU
Welcome to our Week 3 newsletter for term 4. We are well into planning our Christmas Exhibition with students ready for Wednesday 4th December 5:30pm-7:30pm. Our theme explores 'Jesus the Promise' and will include a variety of student created products and experiences that you will be able to explore as a family. This year, after an opening led by our junior primary students, you will be able to explore the event together. It will close with something special led by our primary students. I would encourage you to ask your children what they are doing to contribute to this wonderful celebration. I look forward to seeing you on the night and enjoying the opportunity to gather as a community and to celebrate Christmas.
Our Year 4 students had an exciting time at their sleepover with the need to adjust plans because of the unexpected extreme weather conditions. This reminded me of the importance of learning through experiences. Our staff and volunteers were able to pivot with the students, from sleeping in tents outside to creating indoor camping fun. It was a wonderful learning time and the students in other year levels have enjoyed the shelters they have created and shared with us in our nature play space. I hope you enjoy reading about this in our highlights section along with a report from our Year 6 excursion to the city.
With the Christmas Pageant in Adelaide this weekend, there are always many busy weekends ahead for families. I encourage you to think about maintaining bedtime routines and to take time to enjoy this exciting time of the year.
Thank you and have a lovely weekend.
God bless,
Wendy Matear
Principal
So let's not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don't give up.
Galatians 6:9
Term 4 is always buzzing with excitement, as there are so many wonderful things to look forward to, such as class excursions, Christmas preparations and the end of year celebratory events to name but a few. Along with the excitement of finishing off the school year, there is also the equally exciting but often daunting thought that the new year brings a new class, classmates and a new teacher.
For some, the start of a new year is exciting. However, for others, change of class, classmates and teachers can be a very loaded thought which brings about anxiety and uncertainty. While coming back after the Christmas school break can be nerve-wracking, it is actually an important part of a child’s learning in how they can adapt to change, new classmates, new teachers and a new classroom. Fortunately, there are things we as adults can do for our children to prepare them to face the new year with confidence and hope.
1. Include the child in preparing for the next year. Have your child prepare their uniform ready for the new school year. Let your child help you plan for their recess and lunch and allow them to pack their own lunch box.
2. Avoid being a ‘lawnmower’ parent. Don’t try to smooth a path for your child too much. There is so much value in allowing your child to learn how to solve their own problems. It is so hard to avoid the temptation to step in until your child has had a decent chance to work through the problems themselves. Your role as parent is to be there as a support person to help them develop their sense of independence.
3. Get into really healthy habits before school starts, such as good bedtime routines, early bedtimes, avoiding screen time prior to sleeping, healthy food and drinking plenty of water.
4. Acknowledge that feeling nervous is perfectly normal, but don’t leave them there! Help them to focus on the positive experiences they will have. Remind them that the year previously they were nervous about this year, and it turned out well for them and they’re not nervous now. It will be the same for the new school year.
5. Be mindful that you don’t view your child’s school experience through the lens of your own experience. Our own experiences can leave us with anxious feelings, but if we don’t check our own emotions, we can transfer these feelings to our children. Reassure your child that they are safe at school and their teacher will look after them.
6. Celebrate their success after the day at school. They’ll be tired, so ask open questions and don’t worry if they don’t want to talk about school. If your child is worried about something, remind them to speak to their classroom teacher who is the perfect person to help them.
Please keep in mind that we have the best interests of your child at heart and think extremely carefully about which class they are placed into for the following year. Compiling classes is a highly complex process, and we weigh up many different factors to ensure your child’s success. From past experience, some students and parents are concerned about the class their child has been placed into, and find the following year that it was a very advantageous and successful placement. We would recommend that you have a chat to your child’s teacher if you have reservations about the class for 2025, and ask you to trust your child’s teacher to operate in your child’s best interest.
If your child is worried and you are finding it difficult to manage at home, please seek the support of a member of our Wellbeing Team. We are here to help you, your child and your family.
I wish you and your family a wonderful week.
God bless you,
Deb Clifford
Deputy Principal

On Friday, 27th September the Year 6s ended their term with an excursion into the city. We used our newly learnt maths skills to plan our trip using public transport and caught both a train and a tram to get to our destination.
Once in the city, we explored the Space Discovery Centre, where we learnt about all the jobs you can do in Space, and how astronauts prepare for, and live in the International Space Station. We also spent time in the Botanic Gardens, where we were able to see many of the Chihuly Exhibition sculptures. Students became art critics and discussed the composition of the sculptures, even deciding what they would call them if they were the artist.
The students represented Bethany well in all of their public transport travels and were even able to recreate a group photo from Reception that was taken on the steps in the Adelaide Railway Station. It was a day of beautiful weather, new experiences and time spent together, adding more memories to their time in primary school.
What an exciting time with lots of ‘firsts’ for many students.
Some were visiting the Botanic Gardens for an Indigenous Walk with Trent, creating nature sculptures in Botanic Park, catching a tram and playing on the playground at Bonython Park. Our plan was to sleep on the school oval in the tents, which the students helped put up on Wednesday, another first for many, but nature had other ideas. A storm came through with high winds, rain, thunder and lightning and many anxious parents (yes, we knew about you) and the decision was made to sleep indoors. This was a disappointing outcome for many students and adults but part of a memorable adventure – rescuing our stuff from the tents in the pouring rain while trying to keep it all dry enough to sleep on.
Other ‘firsts’ included dessert before dinner, lollies after dinner, spending the night away from their parents, breakfast at school, building shelters to protect the group and throwing returning boomerangs, although most did not return.
Overall it was a great experience for the students and has inspired many of them to include their families with similar experiences.
