Bethany Christian SchoolMENU
We are excited to share our progress and we are working towards building a Sports Centre with one indoor, one covered court, a movement room, and shared learning spaces. We are in the planning stages of seeking local council approvals and hope to build in 2025. The plans are looking amazing, and the facility will add a great deal of value to our school community. It also enables us to improve our entry to the ELC and to make some improvements to their lovely garden spaces.
Each year schools celebrate Book Week to demonstrate the importance and enjoyment we can receive from good literature. In Week 5, we join in this celebration and this year we are holding a number of school-based events throughout the week, along with a dress up day on Friday 23rd August. There are more details included in this newsletter. I ask that you choose dress up characters that reflect our values and help children think about things that are good and right and bring light not darkness. Please consider costume selections through this lens. The week will culminate with a Junior Primary parade fundraiser. The SRC are supporting the library with this event.
Next week, our Year 3-6 Choir students will be performing for the residents of Hammond Care (Daw Park). Hammond Care is a care facility for those living with Dementia. Our students will perform their concert in the weekly chapel service at Hammond. They will also have an opportunity to meet and talk with some of the residents after the concert. The residents are very excited about hosting our students and it will be a wonderful way for our students to bring some joy to others. Our Year 5 Impact Projects will also be open for business, please see the attached flyer for more information.
I would like to remind you that our Show Day will be held on Friday 6th September. OSHC will be open for bookings.
In July, a team of staff from Bethany travelled to our sister school in Indonesia to provide training and support. This long-term relationship enables us to remain true to our values and serve others with generosity, compassion and justice. We hope that you enjoy reading some reflections from this important partnership.
I pray that you have a restful weekend.
God bless you,
Wendy Matear

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.
Ephesians 6:1
What a privilege it was to visit Hope Village again. We marvel at how good and faithful God is and we praise Him for all He has accomplished since we were last there. To see young children given the opportunity to prosper and live a life of hope continues to bless us. The obedience and courage of Pastor Mike and Ann to God’s calling is inspiring, as they shared stories of provision, courage and care. Having the opportunity to connect with the children of Hope Village in person, warmed our hearts and made us feel a part of their family. Encouraging and training the teachers at Hope School allowed us to see first-hand the care and excitement that they have for the children, displaying God’s love and heart for education in their school. We were both motivated and blessed by this mission opportunity. This truly is a life changing experience, to visit God’s oasis which is “Hope Village”. We encourage you to get involved, as Bethany serves communities and impacts nations!
Melissa and Steve Taylor
The vision of Hope Village is to see “Children Flourishing, Walking in Purpose, and Filled with Hope.” During our recent trip, it was a privilege to witness this vision being realized in the lives of the precious children who call Hope Village home. Having first visited in 2014, I was overjoyed to see the growth in individuals like Joel and Michelle, who grew up in Hope Village and have now returned to take up teaching positions at the high school after completing their university degrees in Medan. It was also encouraging to reconnect with children who were just starting school during my first visit and are now entering their final year of high school, going into the year with dreams, aspirations, hope, and a sense of purpose regarding their future—evidence of God’s amazing story unfolding in lives that have been transformed.
I count it a privilege to be part of a community here at Bethany Christian School, partnering with Base Church and Hope Village to see lives impacted.
Aaron Mabikafola
I love being able to partner with Hope Village and School. The most impactful thing for me is that we are supporting the future of children who would not have the opportunity of a strong Christian education if we did not partner with them. We get to play a part in what Christ is doing to help create generational change.
I am hopeful for the future of our students at Hope School that they will make meaningful impacts for their local community and for Indonesia as a whole. There is so much potential just waiting to be unlocked. I am grateful that we get to partner with incredible men and women in Indonesia who have a heart for Christ and to see children flourishing in their purpose all the time pointing them to Jesus which is truly a blessing. The team have worked so hard in a rural area to provide the best education for the region.

Welcome to week 3! The term has started off well, with a visit from the NED Original show last week. The students were all reminded about the NED message: Never give up; Encourage others; and Do your best. The presenter explained the message through clever illusion tricks and yo-yo trick demonstrations. Yo-yo items are available for purchase via the order form that has been sent home with your child. If the form has gone missing, you can get a new one from the front office. The sale officially closes on Friday 9th August.
Friendology
This year as a school, we have started implementing the Friendology Program to equip our students to learn and improve on their friendship skills.
The Friendology program teaches kids what’s normal in a friendship and the difference between healthy and unhealthy friendships. It also gives them tools and strategies to use when friendships get a little tricky to navigate.
On Wednesday 21st August at 6.30pm we have an opportunity for our parent community to participate in an online workshop that will give parents helpful strategies to support their child in developing healthy friendships.
We believe that empowering our students with these skills will create a culture of kindness at our school and we hope you can attend.

Book Week
This term we have Book Week in week 5. The SRC will be holding a “Dress Up As Your Favourite Character From A Book” Day on Friday 23rd August. All students can choose to come dressed up as their favourite book character for a gold coin donation. All money raised will go towards Hope Village’s library and buying giant games for our students to use during play times.
The library will be selling stationery items during Book Week, and proceeds will also go towards Hope Village library.
Broadly speaking, everyone loves the opportunity to dress up as their favourite character. It would be worth talking to your child about their choice of dress up to make sure that it is school appropriate. Themes of supernatural and horror are not appropriate, as they do not align with the school’s Christian values and do not consider the distress it causes to our youngest members of the school. If your child is unsure whether their dress up choice is appropriate, let them have a chat to their classroom teacher.
I do wish you a very blessed week ahead and pray that you and your family stay healthy.
God bless you,
Deb Clifford
Deputy Principal

NAIDOC WEEK AT BETHANY
National NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each year to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth.
At Bethany, we dedicated time to this learning and saw our classes engage in a range of activities and experiences including; watching a special episode of playschool, reading and telling a range of stories, creating artworks both big and small, discussing the pillars of culture, and creating profiles of influential First Nation’s people.
Additional to this learning, we had a school focus to create a 'contrast to the past' by exploring and giving an Acknowledgement of Country.
On Monday of Week 10, students from grade 6 experienced an immersive Acknowledgement of Country led by Jade Brook, a Nurrunga woman with Kaurna blood and ties to Ngarrindjeri and Barkindji. During this workshop, students were encouraged to use their senses to first connect to Country before using this deep listening to inspire their own personal Acknowledgement of Country.
Later that week, selected students from Years 2-6 welcomed Renee Watego for an Acknowledgement of Country Workshop. While sitting in a circle, Renee discussed traditional ways of learning. It was interesting to note, that though she was there to share knowledge with us, she highlighted that we collectively had about 450 years of knowledge between all those in the room. When out collecting local gum leaves, students learnt about caring for country. Most leaves were taken from the ground, however if a fresh leaf was pulled and it resisted, it was asking to be left alone. In developing a collaborative acknowledgment of country, Renee helped students to think about the land, the people and the values of our school. Then, after hearing about the meaning of a range of indigenous symbols, students represented our school using acrylic paint pens on their gum leaves. During the workshop, it was lovely to see our older students taking their responsibility as leaders to heart. Whether it was making sure no one was left behind while gathering leaves, or by being patient when sharing resources, the picture of community was delightful. The artwork can be explained as a symbolic representation of our connection to and acknowledgement of country.
During our Week 2 Chapel services this term, we officially unveiled this artwork to the school community. We also heard from several students across the school who shared their experiences and new learning from NAIDOC Week. A big thank you to Aria N, Hannah A, Dion A, Alice G, Jessica T, Ella S, Elijah TF and Oscar E for boldly sharing your learning with us.
Ashleigh Squire
This artwork represents our school’s acknowledgement of country. This means that we are grateful for the land that we learn and grow on. This was a really good experience for me, and I felt inspired to do it again and to share this with others. – Oscar E
It was such a fun experience seeing the workshop come together! That final product is so special! What a beautiful way to show the growth in respect of and knowledge of Kaurna country and First Nations peoples in general. Such a personal and meaningful way to acknowledge and celebrate our community!! – Kat Evitts, ESO
