Week 3Term 32023

Our Year 6 students collaborating during NAIDOC Week activities.

From the Principal

Welcome to our Week 3 Newsletter. Last week classes were able to share their learning from NAIDOC week with different year levels throughout the school. I have asked our RAP team to share with you some of the wonderful experiences that were shared. We also hosted some special guests who shared with our primary students their knowledge and skills to build upon this learning through the Kaurna language and understanding the connection between art and story.

Our 2022 Yearbook has been sent off to the printers at the end of last week and we are excited to share with you the memories from last year.

Mini Olympics is coming up on Friday 1st September. This is always a day of fun, and we are so glad that we can invite you to come along to watch and cheer on our students. We will notify you of any sign in process, the program and all the relevant details from the Sports Department. We do encourage you to check your Bethany app and your email for more information closer to the event.

I would also like to remind you that we have a pupil free day for Show Day on Friday 8th September. If your family is planning to visit the Royal Adelaide Show during a weekday, we ask you to use this day to avoid multiple absences over those ten days. Temple Christian College also have the same Show Day, and OSHC will be available for booking on this day.

We received information from the Salisbury Council about some additional signs they will be placing around schools in an attempt to improve school parking. I would encourage you to look at this information which is included in this newsletter. We appreciate your cooperation in following the road and parking rules, as the responsibility for safety belongs to the whole community. Thank you for your help with this important part of school life.

I hope that you have a wonderful weekend.

God bless,

Wendy Matear

NAIDOC Learning & Sharing

After time spent learning during NAIDOC week, students partnered with other students in the school to share their knowledge and appreciation for First Nations peoples and cultures. Students from ELC to Year 6 participated in a wide range of collaborations and activities throughout this week of sharing. It was so encouraging and inspiring to see the students engage with their learning on a deeper level as they also connected with others.

  • ELC – teaching others to sing “heads, shoulders, knees and toes” in Kaurna.
  • Reception – investigating how the colours and shapes on the Aboriginal Flag have meaning and significance.
  • Year 1 – looking at how animals have unique footprints that can be used to follow and find them.
  • Year 2 – talking about the story behind their collaborative artwork of the Rainbow Serpent.
  • Year 3 – sharing Indigenous inspired artwork that incorporated nature and reflected the story of their family.
  • Year 4 – writing a song to teach others to sing the numbers 1-10 in Kaurna, displaying Indigenous inspired echo-art and leading younger students on an animal footprint tracking adventure.
  • Year 5 – articulating how the elders in their lives have helped them grow and how this inspires them to leave behind positive footprints for others to follow.
  • Year 6 – creating collaborative artworks and an articulate perspective-poem, as well as hosting student-led workshops around a campfire to teach others about a range of interesting topics including how Indigenous peoples cared for country by allowing food harvesting areas to regenerate before returning to them for more food.

Additionally, students in Year 3 & 5 participated in an Aboriginal Art incursion with Pat Caruso. Pat is a proud Eastern Arrernte man, business owner and sought-after indigenous artist who creates individual pieces with paint and in digital form.

"I thought the Aboriginal Art morning with Mr Caruso was amazing – I learnt how some of his family was taken away when they were a child as part of the Stolen Generation and how he designed the guernsey for the Crows Indigenous round. I learnt more about how we draw Aboriginal symbols, and that one symbol can mean lots of things." Georgia B.

Students in Year 4 & 6 participated in a separate Karuna language workshop with Jack Buckskin. Jack is a proud Kaurna, Narungga and Wirangu man who has spent his life learning and teaching Kaurna language and culture.

"In Jack’s workshop, we learnt some Kaurna words in a fun, exciting way. We learned how to ask questions about other people and how to introduce ourselves (“Ngai Nuri Sienna”). We also learnt a bit about Jack and his family who are Kaurna people. Thank you, Jack, we really appreciate what you taught us and loved hearing about you and your family."  Sienna F.

Health Care

No Lunch Policy Reminder
Bethany Christian School recognises that nutrition is a critical part of health and development in a child’s life. Better nutrition is related to child’s physical and mental health improvement and stronger immune systems. Healthy children learn better and students with adequate nutrition are more productive. Therefore, our school endeavours to provide efficient and effective interventions to enhance the wellbeing of our students.

Sandwich Bar
•    If students forget their recess or lunch, a sandwich will be provided rather than parents being called - this will be executed by the Wellbeing Team.
•    Parents are welcome to notify the school via phone or email (office@bethany.sa.edu.au) in the morning should you require a sandwich for your child.
•    We encourage students to visit the Sandwich Bar rather than parents dropping off food for them.
•    If the child has consumed all their recess and lunch at recess, despite sound management from the teacher, the student will be provided with a sandwich.
•    Notes are sent home each day via email to inform the parents/caregivers.

If you have any questions regarding this, please contact the school office on 8283 0000.

Thank You

Support Our Year 5 Businesses! - Week 4

Year 5 businesses are on again!

As a part of our HASS unit, our Year 5 students have been learning about the various components of businesses. They have the opportunity to develop their own business idea and try to turn it in to a reality! Their hard working profits will go towards their chosen charity.

After spending weeks developing their business model, presenting their idea, trialling their product and working through feedback, they are finally ready to begin!

Businesses will be open Monday to Friday under the veranda in front of the staff room during Week 4 (next week).

The stalls include: hamburgers, sausage in bread, pancakes, milkshakes, spiders, jelly, ice cream sundaes, brownies, popcorn, s’mores, fruit skewers, toasted marshmallows and games to play! Items range from $1 - $4. All stalls are cash only.

A lot of time and effort has gone in to these businesses, so thank you for supporting our students as they learn and develop valuable life skills through this experience.
