Bethany Christian SchoolMENU
Welcome back to our final term for 2024. I hope that you were able to enjoy the warmer weather and some time with your family over the school break. Our final term always brings a sense of excitement and anticipation as we reflect on the growth of each student over the year. Our Christmas Exhibition, Jesus the Promise is shaping up to be a wonderful community celebration on Wednesday 4th December 5:30pm-7:30pm. We will be exploring the Christmas promise through a variety of interactive ways. We plan to have some food available for purchase and to celebrate together. Your children will begin planning with their teachers the ways they will contribute, and you will have the opportunity to move around the event as a family. We are excited to share our learning with you and to invite you to explore with us. So please save the date, and we will see you there.
Our Year 4 students have their camp this Thursday and Friday. They sleep over at school on the Thursday night after an offsite excursion and then culminate with a day of activities at school, on the Friday. Camps give the time and space for different kinds of learning experiences that help children to build relationships, try new things and to solve problems with others. I look forward to hearing their reflections about their learning.
I thought it would be helpful to remind you about some of the end of year dates ahead of time. Please check the calendar, which is included in this newsletter but also feel free to check the website for the most updated version.
Our Year 6 students graduation ceremony will be held on Tuesday 10th December. This is a wonderful milestone that we celebrate together. Our ELC students graduate on 12th December which is always a delightful celebration of their learning with us. Our final day of school for Reception to Year 6 is Wednesday 11th December finishing at 3:10pm. We also hold a final assembly celebrating the year and this is live streamed and recorded so that you are able to watch this with your family either as it happens, or over the following 2 weeks. More details will be sent home throughout the term about these and other events for you to enjoy.
I hope that you have a restful weekend.
God bless,
Wendy Matear

Welcome back for the final term of 2024! I trust you all had a wonderful school break and made some beautiful memories with your children.
Communication and Handling Complaints Procedure
At Bethany Christian School we value healthy communication between all parties of our school, which includes our students, school staff and our wider school community. Healthy lines of communication are encouraged via means of direct face to face conversations, phone communication or by written correspondence. Your child’s school diary is a perfect tool to communicate easily with your child’s class teacher.
Some frequently asked questions:
FAQ: My child is having a problem with friendships. What can I do?
Answer: Contact the classroom teacher and start a conversation with them. They are with your child the most in the school day and will be able to help your child.
FAQ: My child says they’re having a problem during play break times. What can I do?
Answer: Contact your child’s classroom teacher first. Your classroom teacher will help your child resolve the issue. Remind your child to seek the yard duty teacher wearing the bright yellow hi-vis jacket out when out at play and have a yard duty slip written out.
FAQ: The yard duty incident hasn’t been resolved. Who do I see for help?
Answer: Make an appointment to speak to the relevant yard duty teacher involved. Your child’s teacher can assist to set this up.
FAQ: My child doesn’t want to leave me when I take them to school. What can I do?
Answer: Your child’s classroom teacher is the best person to speak to and seek help. The Wellbeing Team will assist you by offering our counselling or parent support services, which can be sought by teacher referral or by parent referral.
FAQ: Where can I find the Handling Complaints or Communication Policies and Procedures?
Answer: These can be found on our website or in your child’s school diary.
Key Take-Aways:
Always refer your concern to your child’s class teacher. You can make an appointment with them, arrange a phone conversation or write to them (email or diary note).
Encourage your child to report yard duty problems to the yard duty teacher. This teacher will be able to help in a timely and appropriate manner.
Always attempt to resolve complaints in a calm and helpful manner. People who are threatening or abusive towards school staff will be asked to leave the school site.
If, after you have exhausted all efforts to resolve the issue with the help of your child’s teacher, you can make an appointment with the Deputy Principal.
I wish you and your family a fabulous week.
God bless you,
Deb Clifford
Deputy Principal

Eat well, sleep well and learn well
Term 4 is a busy time. Here are some ways we can help our children thrive in a fun-filled learning environment and excel in their learning.
Breakfast is important
It is important to encourage breakfast. A good night’s sleep followed by food in the morning helps your child to stay active and concentrate at school. It also means your child is less likely to be too hungry during the morning and it can help with their performance at school. Be a role model and let your child see you eat breakfast too. A bowl of cereal with milk and fresh or stewed fruit is a great start.
School lunches
A packed lunch from home is a great way for your child to learn about healthy food and to help with preparation. Avoid too much highly processed, sugary, fatty and salty foods. These should only make up a very small part of your child’s diet.
Lunch box suggestions include:
• Sandwiches or pita bread with cheese, lean meat, hummus and salad
• Cheese slices, crackers with spread, and fresh or dried fruits
• Washed and cut up raw vegetables or fresh fruits
• Frozen water bottle or tetra pack of milk, particularly in hot weather.
Water at school
Water is essential for life, and dehydration can cause headaches, fatigue, irritability, and poor concentration, affecting learning and behaviour. To stay hydrated, students should drink plenty of water throughout the day. At Bethany, we encourage students to bring their own water bottles, and our staff will remind them to drink water during lessons and refill their bottles during breaks.
Sleep
Quality sleep promotes analytical and creative thinking, attention, memory, motivation, mental health, emotional well-being, physical health, decision-making, and reduces risk-taking in students. The Sleep Health Foundation recommends that school-aged children (6–13 years) get 9–11 hours of sleep per night. Improve your child's sleep hygiene with simple steps: create a routine, set a bedtime, implement a screen curfew, avoid scary or violent content, and encourage healthy eating.

In the ELC, we have been exploring how to care for Kaurna Land and promote sustainability. We became involved in the Salisbury Council's program Nurturing Nature, encouraging more native plants in our play spaces by partnering with Provenance Indigenous Plants. We invited our First Nation families to come and deepen connections through planting together. We were privileged to have parents, grandparents and siblings come together in the ELC, sharing knowledge and learning. Together we planted fifteen plants, that we are excited to see grow and flourish: Sea Celery, Karkalla, Short Stem Flax Lily, Sweet Appleberry and Bower Spinach.

Each year Bethany holds a Jump Off Day to raise funds for the Heart Foundation which is a great cause. This program promotes participation and exercise which allows the students the opportunity to learn about skipping whilst keeping their hearts healthy.
This year’s Jump Off Day was held on Friday 20th of September (Week 9 , Term 3). It was an awesome day where everyone had a great time. Throughout the day our students participated in lots of skipping and jumping activities using both short and long ropes and having a turn on a jumping castle.
The Sports Department would like to acknowledge and thank the following people for their contribution to the success of this day:
Miss Whitby, Mr Sheeky, Miss Clarke, Mr Nottle, Mr Wyten, Mr Carr, Mr Goldney, 6W for their help and encouragement of the JP classes and the whole Year 6 group for their help with packing up the event.
We would also like to thank all the teachers for their help leading up to and on the Jump Off Day itself – we really appreciated your support! Thanks also to every student for your participation, encouragement, and awesome attitude on the day.
Finally, thank you to all the parents, families and friends for your support through sponsoring the students and all your encouragement. We raised a great amount in 2024 for the Heart Foundation.

In nice sunny conditions the 3/4 boys represented our school with great endeavour and perseverance. We began the day with two losses but the boys kept their heads up to win the next two games with one of the games being decided by a point. The boys made it to the grand final and unfortunately didn't win but they played with great effort until the siren went. Well done on a great achievement boys!

The girls had a fantastic day out and played exceptionally well every game. Even though we had 6 games in a row with no bye, all the girls came out with a great energy to finish the day undefeated and without being scored against. Well done to all the girls who played, you should be proud of your effort and the way you played. You went out and gave your best each game and displayed great sportsmanship.

The Bethany Gold team played a great tournament. After starting the day in learning mode, the team became a threat by the end of the day. They challenged every team they played and won some games. After a very tight first half of the semifinal, a few injuries derailed their push for a grand final birth. In the playoff for 3rd, the girls showed what they were capable of and dominated territory. They were very unlucky to only finish with a draw as the final result. I'm so proud of the way they supported each other and represented the school throughout the day.

I am very proud of the determination and effort the Silver team put into each game. Despite the challenges, the girls gave their best, supporting each and encouraging each other, maintaining positive attitudes. The skills and resilience they displayed are the building blocks for future success; they have made Bethany proud through their perserverance and sportsmanship.
