From the Principal

Welcome to our first newsletter for Term 3. I hope that you were able to enjoy some time with your children over the school break. Our staff started the term on Monday with the State Conference for Christian Schools Australia (CSA). We joined with around 1500 staff from schools around South Australia to learn together. Christian schools are an important part of the education landscape in Australia. We provide caring learning environments for almost 80,000 students. It is wonderful to be a part of CSA and to share many common beliefs and practices that help young people to develop their identity, confidence, and sense of purpose.

In July I was privileged to lead a team of Bethany staff to Hope School to help provide professional development for the school staff in Indonesia. Our long-term relationship has enabled us to develop a partnership that will continue to produce benefits well into the future. Hope School provides education for around 750 students from ELC through to Year 12 in rural Sumatra. There were approximately 40 teachers who participated in our training over the 2 weeks. We shared our learning about critical and creative thinking, leadership, and learning design. We were reminded how blessed we are here in Australia and how important it is to continue sharing with others who are less fortunate. We continue to sponsor children from Hope Village who are orphaned or abandoned. While we were there we were also able to spend time playing, encouraging and sharing with these children. The team were encouraged by the children’s willingness to connect and their appreciation of the small but important things like making a craft, playing Uno, singing and dancing, and having English conversations. These are precious opportunities, and I am grateful to all of those who have given and sacrificed to bless others.

Our Bethany Choir performed on Wednesday 5th July after school. I always enjoy seeing our students perform and I especially enjoy those opportunities where families are able to come along and see their children shine. Thank you for coming along to support our Choir and to the choir team for making this happen. Well done students for your wonderful performance.

This term we will enjoy our Mini Olympics for Reception, Year 1, and Year 2 students. This will be held on Friday 1st September. This is always a wonderful day run by our sports department and we will invite you to come along to enjoy the day. We will send home more information closer to the event. In Week 10 our Reception students will have their swimming lessons. The Reception teachers will encourage you to practice those important independence skills like drying and dressing as they prepare for the week. Reception parents and carers will receive more information and paperwork to be completed.

I hope that your children have returned to school with excitement for a new term of learning. We look forward to partnering with you.

God bless,

Wendy Matear

This Week's Memory Verse

A lying witness is unconvincing; a person who speaks truth is respected.

Proverbs 21: 28

Deputy's Corner

Welcome back for Term 3. I trust you all had a good school break with your family and were able to enjoy the short holiday.

Last term our Student Representative Council (SRC) raised $859.50 for Hope School’s library, in Northern Sumatra. I was fortunate enough to be able to join the school team who worked with the Hope School teachers and the students. While in Medan, the capital city of North Sumatra, the team and I spent the money at a book shop. Ms Ririn (Deputy Principal of the Hope School Primary) and Mr Dana (Principal of Hope School) were with us, so they were able to guide us in what resources and reading material would best suit their new library.

Thank you to everyone who took part in the SRC’s most recent fundraiser, the PJ/Casual Day, as it was only due to your generosity and support that we were able to purchase these books. I know that they will be well read and cherished at Hope School.

The NED Show

In Week 3, on Friday 11th of August, the NED Show will once again be performing for Bethany Christian School. This will be their 8th visit to Bethany Christian School, and it is very popular and worthwhile show that teaches resilience, persistence and regulation strategies. NED stands for; Never give up, Encourage Others and Do your best. All of this is taught during an entertaining show of yo-yo tricks. Students also have the option of purchasing their own yo-yo the week after the show, so in Week 4 of this term, your child will be able to buy a yo-yo to practice the new skills and tricks learned during the NED show.

All information about the NED yo-yo product sales and costings will be made available in the next newsletter.

I wish you and your family well for the term. I hope you all manage to stay warm and well during the wintery weather.

NAIDOC Week Celebrations

In Week 10 of Term 2, our whole school participated in learning experiences to gain a deeper understanding about First Nations cultures and Elders through learning languages, songs, symbols, history, current events, art, food and many beautiful stories.

In Week 2 of Term 3, each class will share with a buddy class, what they discovered as well as learn from their peers in a range of activities and engaging experiences. We look forward to a wonderful week of learning together and growing in respect for others.
