Week 1Term 22020

From the Principal

Welcome to Term 2, whether your child is attending on site or attending through our Flexible Online Learning platform. We have been extremely pleased with the way that students are engaging with this mode of learning. South Australia continues to show good results and we thank you for your part in this. Our community is remaining sensible and calm through what could be a very challenging time and I know that I appreciate the way that staff are working together to follow new guidelines and to help your children to keep learning. Our primary goal is to excel in Christian education and character, inspiring greatness, while serving communities and impacting nations. This continues to occur but does feel different. We are all getting used to a different flow in our lives and I want to commend you for your flexibility and openness to taking sound advice.

The National advice for this term has been to plan to return to full face to face teaching by Week 6 across all of Australia. In South Australia, recommendations have been that any time now all students could return to school. We do know that some families are concerned due to the pre-existing health conditions or age of family members living with them. Bethany Christian School has continued to take a measured approach and we will support you to return your children to school.

Our Flexible Online Learning platform has enabled us to do things differently, while providing a consistent experience for students. The videos help to show the teachers and provide familiarity and the Chapel songs and messages are a great way to feel that they are still connecting with school. I would like to thank our teachers who are amazing at finding fun and creative ways to help children connect with the learning activities. I would also like to thank you as parents and carers for your patience, support, and care, as you make a space, and find a new flow for your family. Thank you also for helping us to stay healthy through the new drop off zones. That is working well in keeping adults physically apart.

We will continue to inform you with the plans for further changes through our Bethany app and the website memos. I am very grateful to work in this school community and I pray that you continue to experience God’s provision and peace.

God bless,

Wendy Matear
Principal

Memory Verse

Then the Lord told me: "I will give you my message in the form of a vision. Write it clearly enough to be read at a glance".

Habakkuk 2:2

Deputy's Corner

Welcome to Term 2 for those who are physically on site or who are resuming school via online learning. I trust that the three week school break was a safe, healthy and restful one. It has been terrific to see all the students who have returned to school this week, and I do look forward to seeing everyone return to school in the next few weeks. I also hope that while Easter was very different this year, that you all made special memories as a family.

Mother’s Day is another special event that will feel different this year due to the social distancing restrictions. We are holding a Mother’s Day Stall next week (Week 2) on Thursday 7th and Friday 8th of May for those students attending school. This year, the stall will only be open during class time and each class will be given a 30 minute shopping time-slot. Gift prices range from 50c - $10. Students are encouraged to bring only a sensible amount of money in a zip-lock bag that has the child’s name, class and the amount enclosed clearly labelled. Encourage your child to hand in their money to their teacher for safe keeping until they can attend the stall. While it will be another event that is going to look different, I do wish all our families a wonderful Mother’s Day!

DEPUTY FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS VIDEO

It is Term 2, so this is a very quick reminder that full winter uniform is expected. If you are unsure about what the uniform requirements are, please refer to the student diary on pages 13-15. Please remind your child to leave their jewellery at home. If your child receives a uniform slip this week, please do not be alarmed as they are a reminder to correct a uniform infringement. If we notice that a student continues to wear the incorrect uniform, your child’s teacher will contact you directly to discuss how the problem can be resolved. The Uniform Shop is currently closed due to social distancing requirements but you can order online via School Locker.

SOCIAL WORKER VIDEO MEMO

We are all living through a unique time in our modern history. The last time our state borders were closed was in 1919 during the Spanish Flu pandemic. This year, many people have lost their incomes, and all of us have felt the impact of social distancing. With all of the changes to our everyday lives and the day to day uncertainty of what might lie ahead in the future you may have experienced a rise in the feeling of anxiety. If you or a member of your family are really struggling with anxiety, anger or depression during this time, we have a welfare team who is able to give you or your family member support. Leeony Pfeiffer is our full time counsellor and Elise Ottens is available on Monday and Tuesday to offer welfare support. To seek their support, please call the school to make an appointment. You are not expected to get through these challenging times alone! We are here to help. Lifeline, Beyond Blue and Kids Line, to name a few, have had significant increases in the number of calls they have received. If you and your family are struggling financially, please be encouraged to access our Hardship Application. Our Bursar, Dean Huntley, is here and available to speak to you if your family are struggling financially. He can be contacted on 8283 0000

I do wish you and your families a safe and very healthy week.

God bless you,

Deb Clifford

Highlights

Uniform Shop

Please note that the Uniform Shop will now be closed until further notice due to the current COVID-19 restrictions. Online ordering will still be available at https://theschoollocker.com.au/schools/bethany-christian-school

Due to the current situation that we are all facing the uniform shop is working hard to ensure that all of your orders are being managed and met in a timely fashion. We thank you for your patience during this time. However we also acknowledge that there have been delays, whether this has been in receiving your items or the unavailability of stock. If this is the case for you, please place a note in your child’s diary so that the teacher is aware of why your child may not be in the correct uniform.

As of next week the option to pick up online orders on Wednesdays and Fridays will be available from the front office.

If you have any questions about online ordering please email bethany.christians@theschoollocker.com.au

Hardship Application Support Forms

If you are experiencing financial hardship during the COVID-19 crisis and have concerns about paying your school fees, please click on this link, complete the Hardship form and return to Dean Huntley, our Bursar. The form can be emailed to dhuntley@bethany.sa.edu.au. If you have any questions about the form please call the front office and ask to speak to someone from the Finance Department.

Please see below some of the health & safety measures that Camp Australia have put in place:

Hygiene Practices

Camp Australia already operates with strict cleanliness and hygiene policies; however, we’ve reinforced and updated these as part of our cautious approach to COVID-19.

  • Handwashing policies have been communicated with educators, reiterating government advice. This information is also being passed along to all children in our services.
  • Camp Australia approved surface sanitiser is being used to sanitise all benches, resources and other high-use areas before, during and after the service.
  • We have sourced hand sanitiser to support hand washing for our educators as well as surgical masks that are to be used if anyone is displaying symptoms.
  • Our service tablet is now strictly being used by only one educator in the service, who will sign your child in and out, upon authorising the parent/guardian.
  • If a child or educator begins to show any symptoms of a cold/the flu, we have a strict action plan to isolate and take action.

Social Distancing

To help significantly reduce the spread of COVID-19, Social Distancing practices are being put into place. This is aimed at reducing the extent of close contact we have with one another. Although this is a challenging concept in childcare, we are committed to do our part in adapting to professional advice, as it emerges.

  • Large groups will be broken up into smaller groups, where possible, with one educator per group to minimise potential contact.
  • Children will not be queuing up in long close-contact lines, and all sign-ins will be delivered quickly and efficiently.
  • Any food will be served with tongs by the educators, to avoid multiple people handling them.
  • Where possible, we will spread the groups between our different licensed spaces to provide the children more space.
  • Our programs will avoid any contact games, such as football, chasey, etc.

School Banking

Message from Commonwealth Bank

The health, safety and wellbeing of our communities and our people remains our highest priority. Due to the ongoing uncertainty surrounding coronavirus, the School Banking program will remain on hold. We will continue to monitor the situation and keep you informed with any updates including how we will be managing Dollarmite tokens for students.

In the meantime, here are some handy online resources for parents who wish to maintain momentum with their child’s financial education:

  • Start Smart: these resources have been created to improve children’s money management skills, and is aligned to the Australian Curriculum and the National Consumer Financial Literacy Framework.
  • The Beanstalk: offers videos and fun activities for children to learn about money.

COVIDSafe App

The Australian Government has released a new app, COVIDSafe, designed to slow the spread of the coronavirus by speeding up the process of identifying people who have been in close contact with someone diagnosed with coronavirus, quickly stopping further spread of the virus in the community.

The app will help keep you, your family and your community safe from further spread of coronavirus through early notification of possible exposure. It will be one of the tools that will used to help protect the health of the community by quickly alerting people who may be at risk of having contact with the virus. Use of the app will help to reduce restrictions than would otherwise be possible.

For more information about and to download the App please click on this link- COVIDSafe
