Bethany Christian SchoolMENU
Welcome to our first newsletter for the year. A special welcome to our new families and those of you moving from ELC to Reception. We have had a very settled start with students transitioning to new classes and a few changes of year levels for teachers. We welcome some new staff and look forward to getting to know you as we learn together.
Next Wednesday, 14th February we are holding our annual ‘Meet the Teacher’ evening. We encourage you to take the opportunity to meet with your child’s class teacher. We will hold two sessions so that you can choose which works best for your family and so that you can visit two different teachers if you have more than one child at Bethany. The two sessions are identical and are at 5:30 - 6pm or 6:30 - 7pm in your child’s classroom. This is a time for you to hear from your child’s teacher about class expectations, routines, homework, and other helpful information. We look forward to seeing you there.
Sunday 18th February we are holding a Community Chapel in our Performing Arts Centre at 10am. We want to invite you to attend if you would like to join us as we come together to celebrate and ask for God's blessing on all we do in 2024. This event is hosted by Base Church. Base Church meet every Sunday here at school and you would be welcome to come along any time.
This week our Reception students began on Tuesday to allow for parents to enjoy and celebrate this exciting milestone with them. For the next 4 weeks, Receptions will stay home on Wednesdays to give them a rest day. They are learning so many new things and we know that a rest is essential to ensure they continue to be their best at school. It was lovely to see how settled they have been in the classroom and in the yard already. First day of school photos will be available and you will receive information directly through your class teacher.
On Friday 16th February our students in Year 3, 4, 5 & 6 will participate in our Cross County event. You will receive an email directly with information including House groups. You will also be able to access a timetable for the day online as each age group run at a specific time. The cross-country track is in the Fairbanks drive reserve and so we ask that you drop off your children and exit the school grounds as normal. You can then enter the event at the rear of the school, which removes the need for you to sign in at the office.
I would like to let you know that Easter is during the school term this year, and so we have an early finish of 12:10pm on Thursday 28th March prior to Good Friday. There are then two more weeks of term which will include Parent teacher interviews. Our school term ends on Friday 12th April. Please check our timetable of events which is attached to this newsletter and put those important events in your diary.
I would like to thank you for reading our communication with you and if you need help to access either our school app or if you change your contact details, please contact the office. Once again, I thank you for your support and look forward to journeying with you this year.

Welcome back to school after the school break. It has been so great to have such a settled beginning after what can seem like a long summer break from school.
It has been especially great to see how well our brand-new Reception students, and the students new to our school, have settled in to our school routines.
Your child may have come back to school without a worry at all and have just slotted back into the school routine as comfortable as a duck is in water. However, I know that for some other students, coming back to school can be quite daunting, and the mild anticipation of coming back to school can blow out to full anxiety.
Some tips to help them are;
Check yourself! Are you feeling worried or anxious about the start of a new year? Stress and worry can be contagious. Try to work out why you might be feeling uneasy and check that you don’t take on too many commitments that might put an additional, unmanageable load on you. It’s okay to ask for help.
Listen actively. When your child verbalises their anxiety, rather than dismissing them with a, “you’ll be okay!”, validate their feelings (“I know it’s hard …”) and show them that you are confident that they will be able to work it out for themselves. Resist the urge to ‘fix’ their problems. Sometimes, just allowing them to verbalise their feelings is all that they really need.
Practice and establish routines. You may need to walk with your child for the first few days or help them establish a helpful routine such as helping them pack their bags or make their lunches. Repetition is the key to success, as the more the child independently does something, the more successful they become and feel less anxious.
Communicate. Let your child’s teacher know about their anxiety. If it continues, get in contact with the Wellbeing Team. Together, let us become a team to help your child come to school confidently.
Hand over. Sometimes it is super tricky for a child to say goodbye to their parent/caregiver. That’s okay. After you have made contact with your child’s teacher or the Wellbeing Team, you might feel like organising a safe drop off zone at school and allow one of the Wellbeing Team members to help walk your child to class. Again, repetition of success is key. Distraction is also a great tool to help a child to refocus on something other than their anxious feelings. You could give your child a job to do in the morning on the way into school, so that the focus is on their job, not how they are feeling.
What happens if my child continues to feel anxious? Most children with lots of praise and reassurance get through their anxiety. Remember, hovering and not letting go of your child subconsciously communicates that you feel that your child is in danger, and your child will pick that up. Moving off having said, ‘goodbye, I love you and I’ll see you after school’ communicates that you are feeling secure in leaving your child and they are safe. If your child still feels unsettled and worried, then seek support from the Wellbeing Team.
If your child develops stomach aches and headaches, this can be a sign that your child’s anxiety may need the support from a healthcare professional. Agreeing to keep your child home again reinforces the child’s perception that avoiding situations that create anxiety are indeed scary and dangerous.
If you find that you need additional support, one of the Wellbeing Team members can help you seek the most appropriate support for your circumstance.
To make an appointment with a member of the Wellbeing Team (consisting of Joy Starling, our school counsellor, Elise Ottens, our social worker and Priya Wilson, our school nurse) simply give the school a call on 8283 0000 and book an appointment or leave a message and a team member will speak to you at a mutually convenient time.

I wish you all well for the start of the new school year!
God bless you,

Late Sign Ins
We would like to remind parents that both side gates will be locked from 8.45am each morning. All students who arrive after this time must sign in at the front office.
Lost Property
A container has been placed in the undercover area in front of Mrs Clifford's office. If your child has lost anything, please check this container. The container will be checked regularly for any named items which will be returned to the right child. Please remember to label all your child's belongings.
Early Pick Ups
If you know that you are going to collect your child early from schoool, we ask that you notify us before 9.30am. We understand that sometimes emergencies happen, but please try to give us as much notice as possible. This will give us plenty time to notify the class teacher and allows the teacher time to have your child ready. Please avoid picking up your child at lunch time. Children are at lunch play between 1pm and 1.40pm. We are unable to locate them in the yard during this time.
Junk Food
Please remember that we do not encourage the consumption of junk food at school. If you have not packed lunch for your child we can arrange for a sandwich to be made for your child from our Sandwich Bar. This is a FREE service.
